senselessly adverb

senselessness noun

Focal Passage:

“My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.”

Jeremiah 4:22

“A senseless murder,” or, as in the words of, “A Day in The Life”, the iconic Beatles song, “I read the news today, oh boy”, another senseless murder. Have you noticed that it has become a daily event? And still “they have no understanding.” A mall guard is threatened and assaulted by a looter. Fearing for his life, he shoots and kills his assailant, justifiable homicide, but the public demands that the guard be prosecuted for murder.

“They are skilled at doing evil; they know not how to do good.”

The Bible has much to say about the moral condition of our nation and the world today, that those who commit crimes against their neighbors, whether from greed or covetousness, are deserving of death. Jeremiah chapter four speaks powerfully about God’s view of lawlessness and His response to it. In Romans, Chapter one, we are warned about those who despise wisdom and instruction, “…they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

“The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God, [but] all have turned away, all have become corrupt;  there is no one who does good, not even one. Do all these evildoers know nothing?” Psalms 14:1-4

May God have mercy on us all.

Prayer:

Father God: O God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God. See how your enemies growl, how your foes rear their heads. With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. “Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation.”

O Heavenly Father, have pity on your children. Send Your Holy Spirit to meet us on the Way, and to stay with us, for the day is now far spent. Comfort us with the Word of your goodness, and break the bread of eternal life with us, through your Son, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
